Chapter 4

The man and the girl spent a few minutes checking out their home in this tiny city. Like the cabin in the woods this place was also fully stocked with clothes and even food and drinks. The little girl went into the room that was given to her as it was stocked with the modest yet flowing dresses. Some were more common while others were very fancy. Like the dress of the women of this tiny city the collars went comfortably around the neck had long sleeves and went down to the ankles even while sitting. And each dress had it’s very own bloomer pants that also were flowing yet incredibly functional.

One dress set was exceptionally beautiful. It was flowing and very white. The girl put the dress on and spent some time making her hair style work with the look. When she came out to see her daddy she looked radiant. But had to giggle at her daddy in the formal wear he had on. While there was nothing terribly humorous about his outfit she was giddy from all the excitement of the evening. He too had a long beard but not as long as most of the men in the tiny city who could tuck their beards into their belts.

A knock came from the front door. It was Reuben their guide coming to escort them to the king. The girl rushed to the door and the man followed.

Are you ready? He asked? They both said they were and they followed Reuben to the main street of the city which went straight up to the king’s gate which in turn went straight through the castle straight up to the king’s throne.

Greetings and welcome to my tiny kingdom. Said the king as he stood up. He was a typical fairy tale plump king. He was good and humble a trait that was very rare to the world of the old man and little girl. They were a bit amazed at the tiny king and his humility, joy and friendliness. With all these traits there was even a sense of firmness and even danger.

Well don’t just stand there let’s get going there is a feast waiting in my dining chamber!

He lead them to his dining chamber. It was a large room with a long table I the middle of it and around it were many smaller tables.

Sit her with me. He said. Right here next to me. They sat down then more people came and sat down filling all the tables.

Tonight is special! Tonight we fill the king’s dining chamber with the people of the tiny because we are honored with special guests! Let us return thanks for all our provisions!

Then they all ambitiously fell to the ground and prostrated themselves.

And the tiny king boomed in a loud voice,

Oh merciful and gracious Heavenly Father we are so grateful for Your provisions of food and guests! Bless those that made this help me to be a worthy king to lead these Your people and bless our guests in their adventures in our world. In Jesus’ name amen.

Let’s eat! So the feasting and merriment lasted several hours until they were all tired and started back to their homes.

Then the king said, we…, I, am truly blessed by your presence this evening! And if you don’t mind I will retire to my bed chambers. You can stay longer if you wish or if you would rather head to bed too you are free in my kingdom.

I think we too shall retire to our home you have so graciously given to us. The old man responded.

Very well I will have Reuben guide you back to your home. The king said. Goodnight dear ones!

The old man and the little girl were amazed at the king. And his true friendly heart so faithful and involved. Nothing about this king was phoney he truly loved people and loved his God. He was a great leader and a great man.

Chapter 3

The invisible sparrow flew erratically but in a general direction back the way they had come when they were larger. The old man realized that when they were at the cabin and they had heard the birds but did not see them that this was the reason. He explained that to his little girl and wondered how many other strange and marvelous things existed in this place. It was amazing how the sparrows seemed to fly all over the place yet easily navigated through the thick forest.

Peering over the side of the sparrow he noticed that they had left the path and were headed into the deepest parts of this evergreen forest. Sometimes the little girl would squeal when the sparrow would fly directly toward a tree or a rock and suddenly alter it’s course around such things. She finally gave up and just had to have faith and trust in this critter. She reassured herself that she had never seen a bird slam into a tree or rock. Although many times the birds would slam into big windows at her grandmother’s house and die. She then wondered if there were any big houses with windows in this place. The old man guessed at her thoughts and asked if she was thinking about grandma’s house. And tried to comfort her that there wasn’t any sign of such houses in this place.

After flying for about ten minutes the sparrow landed on a high limb and what the man and girl saw amazed them. Below in an opening in the forest was a wooden city. Houses and buildings and playgrounds carved out of wood. Trees had villages wrapped all around them and through them. The air was filled with something similar to the smell of cedar but even more appealing.

Later they would find out that these trees were very special trees that would not rot and would not burn except at very high temperatures. The trees were the seedlings of the tree they came through to be made little with the doors on it. The parent tree was very old and special.

The little man appeared as he came of his sparrow and walked toward them on the high limb. It was then the man realized it wasn’t just a limb but some sort of natural landing place for birds. He could see as one would go toward the tree down the limb there was a door on the tree.

Welcome to the city of the tiny king! The man said to these newcomers. Follow me and I will show you to your home.

Our home? The little girl questioned.

Yes you will always have a place among us. He replied.

You will learn much of our kingdom the longer you stay but you are always free to leave and return to our kingdom. The king is excited to meet you and wishes to dine with you tonight. He explained.

What a lovely place full of lovely people! She responded.

The man lead them toward the door and inside was what could only be described as a bird’s nesting area. It was quite noisy and windy as the invisible birds bustled about. There was a large hole higher up where they came and went. If one of the tiny men went out the door an invisible sparrow would be waiting for him. And when he would go back inside they would return to the busy things invisible sparrows did.

The man lead them down a wooden staircase in a wooden tunnel until they came out on the ground. In the middle of this fantastic wooden city. The old man noticed that while everything looked carved out of wood it actually wasn’t carved.

Sir, when we were up on the limb with the invisible sparrows it looked as if all this city was carved out of wood but now upon closer inspection it looks as if it isn’t carved at all. The old man asked.

Indeed it is not exactly carved but rather it is formed a process our ancestors learned to do with a special sap. Don’t get me wrong there is definitely carving involved but with the special sap the structures are formed and hardened. All the wood is still alive and benefits the forest and us. And our use of the wood and sap makes the forest stronger. He explained to the old man and his daughter.

They continued walking down the earthen path beautifully decorated with flowering moss along the sides of the path. The streets had people in them but it didn’t feel busy. The women wore something similar to 19th century modest American dresses but more natural and flowing. They had long beautiful hair. And the men wore long beards and wore rugged clothes. It was a wondrous sight to see!

After turning here and there they came to a beautiful wooden house “carved” in the tree. It vaguely reminded the old man of the pictures he’d seen of the city of Petra carved into the cliff walls in his own world. And in turn reminded him of the bible passage about Edom’s dwellings.

Here is your house. The man Reuben said.

It’s beautiful! The girl said full of giddy excitement.

Now go and clean up and I will return in three hours to bring you to the tiny king.

Chapter 2

The old man and his little daughter were just starting to feel up to exploring the forest in front of the cabin as he started putting his tobacco pipe away. The little girl always liked the smell of her daddy’s pipe. It was always such a pleasant smell one that would always have a special place in her heart for the rest of her life.

Well let’s get a going! He said.
She squealed for excitement and they started toward the forest in the west. Everything was so special here. The grass was so green the sky was light but not hot. The place felt safe and there was always provision.

You know, the old man said, I have always told you that no matter how wonderful this life is if you were to go be with Jesus it would so far surpass any good thing here you would NEVER want to leave His presence. And the opposite is true. No matter how bad this life is nothing is as bad as being cast out of His presence, having Him say to you, away from me for I never knew you ye that work iniquity!

I know daddy I am so thankful for you in my life to share such great and important things with me!

Well let’s get a move on and see what is in this wonderful place we have found!

The old man never felt so young as he did here. His face shone and delight filled both he and the little girl! After a bit of walking they came to the edge of the grassy area. They were both amazed at how thick this forest really was. They both peered into the forest letting their eyes adjust to the dark thickness of it.

Look over there straight out in front. It’s a path. Let’s go! He said to her.

They pushed their way through brush and fern until they got to the path. It wasn’t as dark in here as it had seemed from the grassy meadow.

I wonder where it goes the little girl said.

Shh… Did you hear that? He asked.

What is it she whispered?

Listen…

A noise came from down by their feet it was a squeaky little sound. The old man got down on his knees and followed the sound to what looked like a bunch of sugar ants walking around on their hind legs.

What the…? The old man asked himself.

Why it’s little tiny people the size of sugar ants working in that fallen log over there.

WOW! Lookie there! She exclaimed.

A little tiny man was climbing to the highest point of the log to call out to the old man and little girl. They could hear him squeaking at them so they leaned closer trying not to lose their balance and fall on them.

If you go down the path about ten miles… well a little over one mile to you (as he went on to mutter something to himself). You will find a tree with a door in it go into the door and wait there for someone to come get you and you can stay with us tonight and meet the king of the tiny people. The tiny man told them.

The old man stood up and told the little girl what the tiny man told him.

That sounds exciting let’s go right away! She said.

Okay, okay hold your horses. He responded. I’m not as young as you are.

Well it seems to me you are! She said. I think you have forgotten you have become quite spry since we came here.

Indeed, and you seem to be a bit older in your understanding. He chuckled.

So they set out to find the tree with the door on it. The forest was exciting. A lot of animals were visible and watching them pass through their stomping grounds. After walking a little over a mile they found it. Sure enough a tree with a door in it! The door was similar to the one they experienced back at the cabin and back in their room at home.

The old man and little girl opened the door and went in. The tree seemed to be hollow but felt alive. A light was shining from the age rings in the tree which was visible above and below. Another door was on the back of the tree which they also went through. But now it was huge!

I think we are now tiny. The old man said. Let’s just go back into the tree and see if we can reverse this.

So they did and when they came out the door they were big again. They then did it again to become tiny again.

That’s really neat! The little girl exclaimed. When we are inside the tree the doors are the same size but when we are on the outside there is the regular size door and on the backside of the tree a tiny door. She observed.

What is that sound? The man asked.

Just then what sounded like birds landed all around them. Even dirt blew around but nothing could be seen. Suddenly a voice spoke to them out of thin air, greetings from the tiny king! We are here to get you and take you to his throne.

The man asked, who are you and where are you?

Hold on I’m hung up on a harness here.

Suddenly a man appeared out of nowhere. I am Reuben of the tiny kingdom. I know you have a lot of questions which will be answered in time. But for now let me just show you something.

The man put his hand on something and lifted something. Then something became visible. It looked like the skin of a chicken.

The man explained, these are called the invisible sparrows. Their feathers disperse light around their bodies making them invisible in normal light. We have technology that helps us see their body heat that is how we trap them and tame them. We climb up their legs into their feathers and they fly us where we want to go. There is one right behind you, reach your hand out and feel for it.

Sure enough the man and the little girl did as instructed and found the feathers and lifted them to see the bird’s skin.

Now climb up the feather shafts and get on his back then we will take off. He instructed further.

So they did that too then the birds took off.

Chapter 1

Once upon a time there was an old man who had a little daughter and almost every day the man gave his daughter a nap. Sometimes she would fuss and carry on about it even though the man would tell her stories. One day both the man and the daughter were very sleepy often the man would decide not to tell a nap story when they were both so tired. This day he thought he would tell a new story but as he told it they both kept dozing off. It wasn’t uncommon for them to both fall asleep in the middle of a sentence. This started to happen when suddenly they were both startled by a noise that woke them both up. It was the sound of a door closing.

In the bedroom they saw a strange door next to the door in and out of the room but this new door seemed to shine. They were both in a stupor from the sleep that filled their blood and without thinking they got up and went into the strange door. What they saw amazed them as they found themselves in the bedroom of a beautiful little log cabin. The little girl ran her fingers on the walls feeling the logs and the bright chinking that helped seal the logs together. There was a window next to the strange door and they both looked out to a beautiful sight. What they saw was lots of green grass that lead up to a very thick tree line that in turn after a ways gave way to sharp rocky cliffs that were part of sharp peaks of mountains. It was daytime out but it wasn’t super bright.

The man and the little girl felt sleep leaving their minds clearer and decided to examine the cabin a little better. Like the shiny door in their house so too the shiny door here was next to the bedroom door in this cabin. The cabin had a basic layout with two bedrooms a hallway a bathroom and a living room kitchen area. The hallway past the bedrooms and bathroom toward the back had a back door and the living room kitchen area had a front door that opened out onto a small porch. The logs were reddish color and the chinking between them was bright and of some sort of strong rubber. There were beautiful windows throughout the house.

Upon further exploration they found out the cabin sat right in the middle of a big grassy field that in turn was surrounded by a very thick forest and sat in a valley running east and west with granite cliffs that were part of mountain peaks that very little grew on. The grassy area must have been roughly a mile in diameter. And the trees to the cliffs must have been another mile. But the valley went on east and west for who knows how far. Toward the east the valley climbed in elevation and to the west it went down. A decent size creek ran through the mysterious forest then through the grassy valley into a small reservoir and away to the west back into the mysterious forest to some unknown destination. The man and the girl stayed at the cabin for some time observing the strange calming feeling of this place. Birds could be heard but not seen yet it was so quiet.

They both realized they were hungry and went back into the kitchen and found something that looked like a pantry and in there found all sorts of meats, breads and cheese. The meats were labeled “buffalo”, “elk”, and “deer”. The cheeses were white and labeled goat, and buffalo. Everything looked more fresh than either the old man or the little girl had ever seen. The old man started the old wood cooking stove and cooked them up the best meal they had ever eaten. They both sat down and ate until they were content and then got up and sat on the porch. It was a wonderful place! They felt so at home and content.

The little girl asked the old man how he thought all this got here and wondered if it was just a wonderful dream. The old man pulled out his pipe and tobacco cleaned it out and started puffing on it before he answered. And said, I’ve been giving all this some thought. It could be just a wonderful dream. Maybe we are both still laying on the bed back at home and I just got so good at telling this story that we are both so caught up in it we don’t realize where we are. Maybe one of us is asleep and it is just a dream. I suppose it would have to be me since I am aware of myself here. Maybe I just got so sick of living in a box in the middle of everyone else living in a box that I created this world for us to escape to. Kind of like when I was a kid, I always could go some place to get away from people.

Well, whatever it is, the little girl said, it is a wonderful place!
Indeed it truly is, he responded. Let us rest a while and we will go explore out there. He pointed with his pipe to the forest in front of the cabin about half a mile away.
